The US-backed peace plan being aggressively pushed by Donald Trump is facing global condemnation for favoring Russia, as it would force Ukraine to surrender strategic territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the situation as an “impossible choice,” with officials in Kyiv and Europe calling the terms a complete capitulation.
Trump has imposed a rapid and unusual timetable, designating Thanksgiving next Thursday as the “acceptable deadline” for the deal to be signed. European leaders are profoundly concerned, arguing the terms are dangerously one-sided and demand major concessions that would critically diminish Ukraine’s future defensive capacity.
In a solemn public address, Zelenskyy articulated the nation’s crisis of conscience. He stated the choice is between maintaining national dignity and risking the potential loss of vital support from a US administration that is pressuring Kyiv to accept Moscow’s preferred terms. He noted the immediate logistical choice is between signing the agreement or facing another “extremely difficult winter.”
Zelenskyy argued fiercely that accepting the deal would strip Ukraine of its freedom, dignity, and justice. He issued a pointed caution against trusting Russia, referencing the history of two previous attacks. He made a solemn pledge to protect the constitution and never betray his people, recalling the national resolve and refusal to surrender in 2022.
European leaders quickly united in rejecting Trump’s proposed map, which would compel Ukraine to abandon key urban centers and military resources. They demanded that the bedrock of any lasting peace must be the respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and must be negotiated from the existing line of contact, explicitly rejecting Russia’s dictated demands.
