Prime Minister Keir Starmer has attempted to dispel rumours about an impending leadership challenge from Andy Burnham, praising the Manchester mayor’s ongoing work and emphasising party unity.
The speculation was sparked after Burnham avoided giving a firm answer about whether he might one day run for Labour leader. His remarks coincide with declining poll performance and a sensitive budget cycle.
During his trip to Johannesburg for the G20 summit, Starmer highlighted Burnham’s integral role in responding to the recent attack on a Manchester synagogue. He said Burnham’s leadership during the crisis was invaluable.
Starmer expressed frustration over colleagues spreading rumours, including suggestions that Wes Streeting may be eyeing the leadership. He stated that internal distractions jeopardise progress on pressing economic issues.
Burnham insisted he is committed to his mayoral responsibilities while promoting a major growth plan for Manchester. Still, he declined to predict future political developments, keeping speculation alive.
