Haaland Milestone Goal Overshadowed by Brighton Fightback

Date:

Erling Haaland’s historic 150th goal for Manchester City proved insufficient as Brighton & Hove Albion fought back to earn a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening. The result represents City’s third consecutive league draw and sees them fall five points behind Arsenal, who lead the Premier League with 48 points ahead of their match against Liverpool.
Haaland ended his three-match goal drought with a penalty four minutes before halftime, after Jeremy Doku was fouled by Diego Gomez in the penalty area. The decision was reviewed by VAR before being confirmed, and the Norwegian striker made no mistake, taking his season tally to 20 Premier League goals and reaching the significant milestone of 150 goals in all competitions for the club.
The second half saw City push for a crucial second goal, with Bernardo Silva coming agonisingly close when his shot following a Brighton error rebounded off the post. Tempers flared during the match when City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper became embroiled in a heated exchange, leading to both players being cautioned.
Brighton equalised on the hour mark through Kaoru Mitoma, who displayed composure and skill to guide a low shot into the bottom corner from just outside the box. The Japanese international collected a pass from the wing and carefully positioned himself before finding the far corner with a well-executed finish.
The visitors grew in confidence after levelling the score and dominated the closing stages, coming close to finding a winner when Mitoma’s effort from a tight angle struck the post following a goal-mouth scramble. Late drama ensued when Haaland was presented with a one-on-one opportunity against Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, but the keeper produced a vital save to deny the striker and secure a valuable point for his team.
