“Extremely Low Level”: Putin Admits Depth of Crisis While Praising Trump

Date:

Russian President Vladimir Putin has candidly admitted that relations with the United States are at an “extremely low level,” yet simultaneously offered a surprising beacon of hope in the form of President Donald Trump. This juxtaposition highlights the dire state of affairs and Moscow’s potential path out of it.
Speaking in the closed nuclear city of Sarov, Putin did not mince words about the relationship’s collapse over issues like Ukraine and NATO expansion. However, he quickly pivoted, stating, “there is a light at the end of the tunnel now that President (Donald) Trump has come to power.”
This admission of crisis, followed by personal praise, comes as the Trump administration is amplifying the pressure. A two-week deadline has been set for a decision on Ukraine, with “massive sanctions” hanging in the balance. Putin’s comment appears to be a direct appeal to Trump to choose diplomacy over economic warfare.
While acknowledging the low point, Putin also reasserted a high principle: Russian sovereignty. He declared it was a matter of life and death for his nation. This suggests that while Moscow is seeking a better relationship, it will not compromise on what it views as foundational to its existence, even to escape this “extremely low level.”
