Trump Urges Iran to End Its ‘Strange’ Diplomatic Behavior and Make a Deal

Date:

President Donald Trump publicly called out what he described as the “strange” diplomatic behavior of Iranian negotiators on Thursday, accusing them of contradicting their government’s official stance by privately seeking a deal while pretending publicly to be disinterested. The Truth Social post was a pointed rebuke of Iran’s handling of the peace process and a clear signal that Washington’s patience was reaching its limit. Trump urged Tehran to get serious immediately or face consequences he described as severe and permanent.

The US ceasefire proposal contains 15 points designed to address the most contentious issues in the conflict. These include sanctions relief for Iran, a scaling back of its nuclear programme, restrictions on its missile capabilities, and the restoration of open navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The strait carries roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply and is a critical element of any peace arrangement. Iran’s rejection of the plan has frustrated American negotiators.

Iran has publicly outlined a competing set of demands through state television, including protection for its officials from targeted strikes, formal guarantees against future warfare, compensation for war damage, and internationally recognized sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. These conditions are substantially different from what Washington is prepared to offer. The two sides remain separated by a wide and as yet unbridged gap in their expectations.

The cost of the conflict in human terms is enormous. More than 1,500 people have been killed in Iran and nearly 1,100 in Lebanon, while deaths have also been recorded in Israel and other countries. Thirteen US troops have been killed, and millions of civilians in Iran and Lebanon have been forced to flee their homes.

Trump’s message Thursday was both a critique and a call to action: Iran must end its contradictory behavior and engage in honest negotiations. With military strikes continuing alongside diplomatic efforts, the situation could easily tip toward catastrophe. A genuine commitment to peace from both sides is the only path out of this devastating conflict.
