Sheffield Wednesday fans are grappling with “one of the most bittersweet days” in their 158-year history after owner Dejphon Chansiri placed the club into administration. The move achieves the fans’ goal of ousting Chansiri but comes at the devastating cost of a 12-point deduction.
The penalty leaves the Owls on -6 points at the bottom of the Championship, 15 points from safety. The Supporters Trust said it was “overjoyed to have Dejphon Chansiri out of our club for good,” blaming his “years of financial mismanagement” for the crisis.
The club’s financial state is dire, with $pounds{}$1 million owed in taxes and a repeated failure to pay staff and player wages. This instability led to the departure of former manager Danny Röhl and several key players over the summer, leaving a threadbare squad.
The club is now under the control of administrator Begbies Traynor. They are tasked with finding a new owner “as swiftly as possible” and will market the club and Hillsborough stadium as a single package.
Manager Henrik Pedersen, while acknowledging the “sad situation,” insisted it could “still be a good day.” He called for a “fresh restart” and, against all odds, said he has “a big belief we can survive in the Championship.”
