Greece and Saudi Arabia Advance Energy Cooperation and Interconnection Project

Date:

Greece’s Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou met with Saudi Arabia’s Industry and Mineral Resources Minister Bandar bin Ibrahim Al-Khorayef to strengthen strategic energy ties between the two nations. Discussions centered on the “Saudi-Greek Interconnection” project, a major initiative that will link the Middle East and Europe through an energy bridge, reinforcing Greece’s position as a regional energy hub.
The ministers also explored collaboration in hydrogen development, particularly Greece’s potential role as a gateway for Saudi hydrogen exports to Europe under the “South East Europe Hydrogen Corridor” initiative. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation through the ongoing Strategic Dialogue framework established between their countries.
The meeting followed the first session of the Supreme Council for Strategic Cooperation held in January 2025, co-chaired by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Minister Al-Khorayef also invited Greek officials to participate in the 5th Future Minerals Forum in Riyadh in January 2026.
The talks concluded positively, with both parties emphasizing their shared commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in renewable energy, interconnection projects, and emerging technologies such as hydrogen.
