A major diplomatic row has erupted after Donald Trump claimed he received an “assurance” from Prime Minister Narendra Modi that India would stop buying Russian oil. “That’s a big stop,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
This claim was almost immediately countered. India’s MEA issued a statement clarifying that its energy policy is guided by “national objective” and the “interests of the Indian consumer,” not external pressure.
Russia’s Ambassador, Denis Alipov, also weighed in, stating that Russian oil supplies are “very beneficial for the Indian economy.”
Simultaneously, Alipov unveiled a major defense package, reinforcing the 60-year military partnership. He offered India co-production of the Su-57 fighter, drones, and other advanced technologies.
This rapid sequence of events showcases the intense geopolitical pressure on India, caught between US demands (backed by tariffs) and its long-standing strategic alliance with Russia.
