President Donald Trump is banking on his personal relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping to solve a trade war that he himself admits is “not sustainable.”
“I get along great with him,” Trump said of Xi in a recent interview. He confirmed the two leaders would meet in two weeks, adding, “I think we’re going to be fine with China.”
The central problem they must solve is the high-tariff policy. “It’s not sustainable,” Trump acknowledged, a major admission. He immediately deflected blame, however, stating, “they forced me to do that.”
This optimistic diplomacy follows a week of threats, where Trump discussed canceling the very meeting he is now promoting. He also remains cautious, noting “China is always looking for an edge.”
The meeting, expected at the APEC summit in South Korea, is critical. A 90-day trade truce is set to expire on November 10, adding pressure on the two leaders to find a “fair deal.”
