Study Reveals Women More Likely to Suffer from Dry Eye Disease

Date:

Persistent symptoms of dry, itchy, or burning eyes might not just be from fatigue or extended screen time, but could indicate dry eye disease, a condition that impacts comfort and vision. Women are particularly susceptible to this ailment due to hormonal fluctuations, aging, and increased screen exposure. The issue arises when the eyes fail to produce adequate tears or when tears evaporate too rapidly, leading to irritation and symptoms such as burning, redness, and blurred vision.

Hormonal changes throughout a woman’s life, such as those occurring during pregnancy, breastfeeding, perimenopause, and menopause, can affect tear production and the glands that maintain the protective oily layer of tears. As women age, natural changes in tear production can further exacerbate the risk. Long hours spent on digital devices can also contribute, as infrequent blinking during screen time can prevent tears from spreading evenly across the eye surface, increasing dryness and discomfort.

Additional factors, including certain health conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders, and autoimmune diseases, can heighten the likelihood of experiencing dry eye symptoms. Medications for allergies, depression, blood pressure, and hormonal treatments may also reduce tear production. Environmental conditions like air conditioning, windy weather, and dust can further enhance irritation.

To alleviate discomfort, adopting simple practices can be beneficial. Following the 20-20-20 rule—looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes—can help. Regular blinking, managing environmental factors like avoiding direct airflow from fans, staying hydrated, and maintaining a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids are also recommended. Despite these measures, if symptoms persist, consulting an eye-care professional is crucial to determine if dry eye disease is the cause and to explore treatment options like lubricating drops or eyelid care.
