Saudi Arabia Urges Global Protection for Middle East’s Strategic Waterways

Date:

Saudi Arabia has called on the international community to safeguard the freedom of navigation in key Middle Eastern waterways, emphasizing that any disruption could jeopardize global energy security. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan urged for the protection of the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden, which are crucial for international shipping.

Bin Farhan highlighted the importance of maintaining the Strait of Hormuz under the conditions that existed prior to February 28, advocating against any additional fees or taxes on vessels navigating this route. He criticized the use of these strategic waterways as leverage for political coercion or threats against other nations, underscoring the need to uphold maritime navigation in accordance with international law and UN resolutions.

The Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab are vital corridors for the global movement of oil and gas, and any disturbances in these areas could significantly impact energy supplies and shipping routes worldwide. Saudi Arabia’s concerns arise amidst ongoing regional tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, along with maritime disruptions linked to the Iran-backed Houthi movement in the Red Sea region.

By raising these issues at the UN General Assembly, Saudi Arabia is seeking to rally international support for the protection of these critical maritime passages, ensuring that they remain open and secure for global trade and energy transportation. The appeal underscores the broader geopolitical dynamics at play in the region and highlights the interconnectedness of global energy infrastructure and security.
