Saudi Arabia to Purchase F-35 Jets in $24.3 Billion US Deal

Date:

The United States has approved a significant $24.3 billion deal to sell 48 F-35 stealth fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, a move that marks a further deepening of military ties between Washington and Riyadh. While the U.S. State Department announced the deal, it is still subject to approval by Congress.

According to the State Department, the sale is intended to bolster Saudi Arabia’s defensive capabilities and enhance its ability to counter regional threats. The agreement also aims to improve interoperability between the Saudi and U.S. military forces. Despite the scale of the deal, U.S. officials emphasized that it would not disrupt the existing military balance in the Middle East, a region where maintaining Israel’s military edge remains a key U.S. policy.

Saudi Arabia has long been interested in acquiring the state-of-the-art F-35 aircraft, a capability currently exclusive to Israel within the Middle East. This exclusivity has been a point of contention, with Israeli officials expressing concerns over the potential ramifications of Riyadh acquiring such advanced military technology.

This proposed sale is part of a broader pattern of U.S. arms agreements with Saudi Arabia, which have included sales of bombs, tank engines, and precision rocket systems. However, the deal is expected to encounter scrutiny in Congress. Lawmakers are likely to raise questions about the safeguarding of sensitive U.S. military technology, particularly in light of Saudi Arabia’s increasing engagement with China.

As the proposed sale awaits Congressional review, it underscores the complex dynamics of U.S.-Saudi relations and the strategic considerations at play in arms sales to the Middle East. The outcome of this deal will likely have implications not only for U.S.-Saudi ties but also for regional security and diplomatic relations.
