U.S. Delays Military Aid to Saudi Arabia as Houthis Progress in Yemen

Date:

The United States has opted against extending direct military aid to Saudi Arabia amid escalating Houthi control along Yemen’s western coast. This decision follows recent discussions between U.S. officials and Houthi representatives in Oman, where the Houthis reaffirmed their commitment to a 2025 ceasefire agreement.

During the talks, Houthi representatives assured U.S. officials that they do not intend to target American or international shipping in the Red Sea, although they consider Saudi-linked vessels as potential targets due to Riyadh’s involvement in the ongoing Yemen conflict. This development has heightened concerns regarding the stability of shipping routes through the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical juncture for global trade.

The U.S. government’s decision to avoid military intervention on behalf of Saudi Arabia leaves Riyadh facing the prospect of either negotiating with the Houthis or seeking enhanced regional support. The situation puts additional pressure on Saudi Arabia as it navigates its response to the Houthi advances.

Compounding tensions, Saudi authorities reported intercepting a Houthi drone near Mecca, though Houthi officials have denied any intention of targeting the sacred city. This incident has further exacerbated worries about the security of the Red Sea shipping lanes and the broader implications for regional stability and international commerce.
