Saudi Arabia and Greece have committed to enhancing their cooperation in the fields of energy, investment, and security, as part of a broader effort to safeguard international shipping routes and ensure stable energy supplies. This pledge was made during a meeting in Riyadh between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, marking a century of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
In their joint statement, the leaders underscored the importance of protecting shipping routes and expressed concerns about attacks on energy infrastructure that could impact global markets and economic stability. Greece commended Saudi Arabia’s role in stabilizing global oil markets, particularly through alternative export routes like the East-West Pipeline.
Energy cooperation was a focal point of the discussions, with both countries agreeing to expedite work on an electricity interconnection project that aims to enable power exchanges between Saudi Arabia and Europe via Greece. There was also an exploration of opportunities to export clean hydrogen from Saudi Arabia to Greece and other EU markets, alongside investments in renewable energy, conventional energy, and petrochemicals.
The meeting also saw commitments to expand economic ties in sectors such as infrastructure, construction, logistics, and technology. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached about $1.7 billion in 2025, indicating a growing commercial relationship. In digital connectivity, both sides noted progress on the EMC submarine cable project, which is set to improve communications infrastructure between East and West.
Saudi Arabia invited Greek companies to invest in its major development initiatives, including the Riyadh Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup, while Greece encouraged Saudi investors to explore opportunities in transport, energy, logistics, and advanced technologies.
Defense and security cooperation were also addressed, with agreements to strengthen efforts in counterterrorism, cybersecurity, intelligence sharing, and professional training. Additionally, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to international climate agreements and supported collaboration in carbon management, AI, space technology, healthcare, education, tourism, and culture.
The discussions build on the strategic partnership council established in 2022, highlighting the growing importance of Saudi-Greek relations in areas such as energy security, international trade, and regional connectivity.
