Egypt Offers Defensive Military Support to Saudi Arabia Amid Regional Tensions

Date:

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has affirmed that any military support provided by Egypt to Saudi Arabia will be restricted to defensive operations, steering clear of offensive actions against Yemen. This statement underscores Egypt’s commitment to assist in safeguarding Saudi territory and the broader security of Arab states if requested, with a focus on regional stability and national security.

The announcement comes amid considerations in Egypt for a proposal that would permit the president to authorize defensive military aid to Saudi Arabia. However, parliamentary discussions regarding this measure have been delayed until October 26. According to Egypt’s constitutional framework, deploying troops for combat missions abroad requires consultation with the National Defense Council and a two-thirds majority approval from parliament.

President El-Sisi emphasized the interconnected nature of Arab countries’ security, specifically the Gulf states, with Egypt’s national interests. He reiterated Egypt’s stance on noninterference in other countries’ internal matters and the protection of national institutions, while opposing armed militias.

This development arises amid heightened concerns over regional security, particularly following an increase in missile and drone attacks by Houthi forces targeting Saudi Arabia. The escalation has also raised alarms about maritime safety in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical corridor for international shipping.

In a related context, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty indicated that Cairo is actively engaging with Red Sea nations to bolster regional security through avenues like economic development, logistical coordination, and enhanced partnerships.

Egypt’s position reflects its strategy to support Saudi Arabia’s security needs while refraining from engaging directly in offensive military operations in Yemen, maintaining a focus on defensive measures and regional cooperation.
