UAE Resumes Financial Support as Saudi Arabia Pledges Air Support in Yemen Conflict

Date:

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia are enhancing their military cooperation in Yemen as the UAE resumes financial backing for Yemeni government forces combatting Houthi rebels, and Saudi Arabia offers air support to the coalition. This development occurs amid rising security concerns due to Houthi advancements and regional attacks.

The renewed alliance could potentially mend relations between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which have previously clashed over Yemen’s political future and the involvement of southern separatist groups. Earlier, the UAE had backed and trained several southern military factions before pulling out from Yemen in January. Meanwhile, Yemen’s internationally recognized government has initiated a counteroffensive aiming to reclaim areas near Marib and the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait, although progress remains limited due to ongoing hostilities and security threats.

The conflict has escalated regional tensions, particularly for Saudi Arabia, which has been targeted by Houthi-attributed drone and missile attacks. In response, Egypt has expressed its readiness to consider defensive measures to assist Saudi Arabia, while the United Kingdom is evaluating requests for additional military aid to the region.

The ongoing conflict exacerbates Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, with over 200,000 people reportedly displaced since August, adding further strain on humanitarian organizations working to provide emergency relief. This situation underscores the dire humanitarian needs in the region as military operations continue.
