Rubio Consults Gulf Leaders Amid Worries Over $300B Iran Rebuilding Fund

Date:

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has embarked on diplomatic discussions with Gulf allies concerning a proposed $300 billion Iran reconstruction fund. The initiative has sparked apprehension among regional partners, who fear that the financial aid might enable Tehran to enhance its military capabilities.

Rubio’s visit to Abu Dhabi is centered around talks addressing the recent accord aimed at concluding the protracted US-Israel conflict with Iran. Within these meetings, Rubio plans to tackle the lingering concerns surrounding the agreement and other unresolved matters with Gulf leaders.

The reconstruction fund proposition is causing significant debate among US allies, as there are worries that Iran may allocate the resources to fortify its defense systems. Moreover, Gulf countries are anxious that the agreement lacks provisions for Iran’s ballistic missile program.

Security concerns have been voiced by several Gulf nations, such as the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, following attacks they endured during the conflict. Both countries, which host crucial US military installations, are requesting stronger assurances to safeguard against future threats.

Rubio’s diplomatic efforts are part of Washington’s attempt to uphold support for the agreement while addressing feedback from regional partners and some US lawmakers. Although Gulf leaders have endorsed initiatives to resolve the conflict, they remain wary about the conditions outlined in the deal.
